How to install an eSIM on iPhone

It takes about two minutes. Install over Wi‑Fi before you fly, then switch the travel line on when you land.

Before you start

Option A: scan the QR code

  1. Open Settings › Cellular (called Mobile Data in some countries).
  2. Tap Add eSIM (or Add Cellular Plan), then Use QR Code.
  3. Scan the QR code from your email and tap Continue. Stay on this screen until it finishes. It can take a few minutes.
  4. When asked, label the new line, for example “Travel”.

Option B: the QR code is on the same iPhone

On iOS 17.4 or later, open the email in the Mail app, press and hold the QR code, then tap Add eSIM. You can also save the QR code to Photos and choose it from the Use QR Code screen.

Option C: enter the details manually

Go to Settings › Cellular › Add eSIM › Use QR Code › Enter Details Manually and type the SM‑DP+ address and activation code from your installation instructions.

When you land

  1. Go to Settings › Cellular, tap your travel line and make sure Turn On This Line is on.
  2. Under Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data, choose the travel line.
  3. Turn on Data Roaming for the travel line, unless your installation instructions say otherwise.

Your home SIM stays in your phone, so you can still receive calls and SMS on your usual number. To avoid roaming charges from your home carrier, you can turn off data roaming for your home line.

FAQ

Can I install the eSIM before I travel?

Yes. For most plans the days start counting when the eSIM first connects to a supported network at your destination, so installing a few days early is fine. Check your plan details to be sure.

Can I use the eSIM for a personal hotspot?

Yes, as long as your iPhone and the local network support it.

Does my iPhone support eSIM?

iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and newer support eSIM. iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao may not.
